We got a cat today! Our household has been cat-less since June 16, 2006 - the day my sweet Lucy died. I waited to get a new cat because I knew I could never replace Lucy and was nervous about introducing a new animal with Jackson so little. But today I woke up just shocked that my home was still cat-less! It's been starting in for weeks, really. The decision just hit today. Dan was on board about getting another cat, but not quite today. As usual, my spontaneous decisions took him by surprise. He's so good at dealing with me and my quirks though and agreed to make the late afternoon run out to the Animal Humane Society.
Here she is: Makita*. Two years old, declawed front (whew! I never wanted to declaw again because I know it's so brutal, but am relieved that I won't have to deal with claws on the baby or the couch!), lived with kids before, purrs like crazy, has a little squeaky voice and is just about the sweetest kitty you could ever find. She's a petite little thing, all black with just that little tuft of white in the picture. So sleek and gorgeous...a true black cat, with those yellow eyes and sleek little tail. What a beauty! (More home photos coming soon, this is the one from the AHS web site.)
*Now for the name...Makita. Hmm. Doesn't do much for me, but she's already two years old. Should we change it? Leave it? Change it to something similar? Chiquita Banana? Hummus & Pita (keeping in line with weird names like "yogurt & granola")? Chiquitita like from the ABBA song (that's been in my head all afternoon)?
What do you think? Weigh in with your comments on this one...we really can't decide. Does she look like a Makita or is there some other name just waiting to be un-earthed for this Kool Kat?
Kitty love to all!

Hmmm Makita isn't a name I would probably pick either. It IS hard to change a pet's name that they came with...I changed my weiner dog's name from Hank to Frank a few years ago and that went smoothly.
What about Nita?
She is just beautiful, by the way!!! Congrats on the new family member!

She is indeed a beauty!
Our black cat is Daisy -- got her as a little little kitten from a shelter. She is the love of my life, such a beauty and she looks just like your kitty.
I'd change the name. Cats don't seem to care what their name is anyway! They'll only pay attention to you when they deem it in their interest, you know.
I wouldn't restrict the new name to something similar either. I like Kool Kat!! Or Kitkat!!
Have fun with your new love.

Makita is a cool name. In my opinion, the name of a shelter animal is part of the package! A perfect example is "Cujo." Tough name, but we just HAD to keep it!
Good Luck!

Congrats! I personally like the name Makita - sounds very exotic. :-)

Oh, she is so beautiful! She looks like a dainty and sleek version of our Payou (isn't it interesting how we all have the urge to compare other people's pets to our own).
Makita does seem to fit her - but I think you should go with a name that you can say with love. It may even be that you could leave her name but then call her a nickname - Mickey? I find that we use nicknames for our cats more than their real names. We change them all the time and they don't seem to care - Big Boy, Baby Tofu, Pretty Girl, Clickety Clack, Skinny Lady, Bubbie. I guess to them it's all the same sing-songie, baby voice so they know who we're talking to!
Perhaps to similar, but I've got Elton John stuck in my head now ... "Nikita"
