Tales from the Frog Pond

Sometimes a Knitter just has to know when enough is enough. When nothing is going to make you like that project enough to finish it. When no yarn or embellishment is going to "fix" it. When it's time.
Ribbit.

This gorgeous alpaca scarf has been sitting in the same box as Audrey II since the fall of 2004, waiting to be declared "complete" so it could become part of my wardrobe. It was technically complete as it was officially bound-off. And it was a lovely, light little thing in wonderfully variant shades of chartreuse and an "Eve's Rib" pattern. I loved it, really.

But this was the second identical scarf in this yarn (my mother took the first one...how can you say no when your mom declares that something you knit is for her?) and for some reason, I ran out of yarn on the second one made with a seemingly identical skein. The first one is long enough and even has fringes. But this one was never destined to be long enough to actually wear (for my taste, anyway). I tried to add that ribbon-y stuff in the photo in a weave and then have it be the fringe to make it longer, but it ended up looking more like a scarf to go to the Opera than a Crunchy Girl scarf. I don't go to the Opera.

So I frogged it today. I decided not to soak the yarn to get the kinks out because alpaca is so light as it is, almost fragile. I don't mind knitting with kinky yarn anyway. What will it become now? Not sure yet, but I have some lovely charcoal gray alpaca that could potentially become its mate in some scarf scheme. I've got a few other ideas brewing too... It just felt good to finally *decide* something on that project. Even though it took me back to the drawing board.

In other project news, I've finished another headband and am already whipping through a third. Why so many, you ask? Stay tuned for news of a y&g Etsy shop. That's right folks, save your pennies and an original yogurt & granola headband could be yours (among other little handmade treasures)! I'm not sure what my launch date will be, but you can be sure that you'll hear it here first.

A huge thank you goes out today to my mother's boss' daughter for giving away a ton of her kids' old books to today's youngins. Jackson scored on these titles and I was thrilled to bring the books home.
But despite his mild excitement at seeing the books at Grama's workplace, he has shown absolutely no interest in them at home. He must have HIS books. We read HIS books about 50 million times a day and I guess it was only his Mommy (and probably his Daddy too) who was getting sick of the same old Babybug stories and Brown Bear boardbooks. My bookworm son is not bored yet and while tiring at times, it is a good thing.
Another score for today is the bag of Girl Scout Cookies that Dan brought home from work. Just in time for a long, three-day snow weekend. Did I mention that we got fifteen inches of snow last weekend and are currently getting another two feet dumped on us as I type? Oh, wait. That's right. It's March. March in Minnesota brings snow. Big, thick, heavy, wet snow. Just when we're ready for spring.

Oh well, at least the warmish temps (hovering right around 30) mean that we can all go outside and play tomorrow. One of the bus stop kids made a mini-snowman on our lawn this morning and I can't wait to show Jackson. That is, if there's anything left of it. Last I saw, it looked like it was sinking into the snowdrift as the new snow piled on...

newsflash:

About ten minutes after I posted my last entry on February 26, Jackson walked. Five solo steps, smiling all the while, then falling in his Momma's lap. Not much solo walking activity since, but it's official - the first steps have occurred!
