Memorial Day Weekend Hikes

Our family spent the long Memorial Day weekend hiking and gardening. What glorious weather we had! Many, many photos of the things we saw can be viewed on our Flickr page, but here are a few of the Little Hiker to whet your whistle.

First things first: A Contest! The first correct guess telling how many turtles are in this photograph wins a prize. Leave your guess in the comments! Enter by Thursday night - the winner will be announced in this week's edition of love, friday. (Click the photo to enlarge, uploaded extra big for your zooming pleasure.)

Hike #1 - Westwood Hills Nature Center, Friday afternoon
Happy Hiking Boy!
Hike #2 - Hyland Park Reserve, Saturday afternoon
Curious Hiking Boy...
Hike #3 - Minnehaha Creek loop to the Mississippi, Monday morning
Crabby Hiking Boy?
Hike #4 - Wood Lake Nature Center, Monday afternoon
Happy Hiking Boy Returns!
Jackson did get out of the backpack on the last hike and walked the second half of the hike on his own. We were so surprised that he lasted that long (about a mile)! He stuck to the trail and absolutely loved it. A born hiker.

Happy Trails to you!

P.S. We planted some new native prairie plants and some herbs and also transplanted a hoard of day lilies to a new spot behind the garage for weed control. Reports on all of the growing things to follow this summer!

7 turtles?

10 turtles? It looks like you had a fun weekend. A sling with them on your back is great for when they want to walk most of the time, but can still get tired. It doesn't weigh as much as the backpack and is easier to carry while they are walking.

9! Oooo, oooo, me! 9!

I guess it takes counting turtles to get me to leave a comment these days. :)

looks like you had a nice hike.

I'm going to have to guess 11 turtles. Looks like you had a great weekend and Jackson is just too cute!

Well, dang, I was going to guess 9. Um, 12, since everything less is taken!

Hey.... what happened to my guess of eight from earlier this morning?! No fair! =\

I only counted 8... but then again, my eyesight is rather poor as of late. Your little boy is adorable!

Someone else took my first guess, so how about 13? Maybe it will be lucky!

I see 9 turtles in that picture. It'll be interesting to see how many there really are! Are you going to circle them all and post the picture for us? ;-)

I'm glad you had a good weekend and I'm in awe of all the hiking you did. Did Jackson do any napping on the hikes?

I saw nine, so I'll have to go with that common number (what happens if there are multiple guessers?), though I really did try to find lucky thirteen....

I see ten.

I see nine.

13, I think.

I am going to say 9 although I have the feeling that the real answer is zero and those are just big leaves in the water. :)

I'm going with 10.

Adorable hiking photos. Jackson is a cutie!

Hrm. I counted ten. So, to be different I should say eleven-- but I'm going to stick to ten.

I see ten.

I saw ten but I think there is one hiding in plain sight so my official guess is 11.

Lucky number 13! 13 turtles!

I'm not sure whether I can see 10 or 11 but I'll go with 11

10 turtles? Not to influence the drawing in any way, but I LOVE turtles and counted while drinking from my FL Gumbo Limbo Nature Center "race for survival" sea turtle mug. When I was heartbroken by my first boyfriend, my dad bought me a turtle (Myrtle Turtle - it's not like they know their names). And I painted Amy's turtle stencil on to jeans. I hope the prize is something turtle-y.

I'm going with 10...although I have no way of knowing how many other turtles are lurking beneath the surface...
