I always think about that lyric when I'm hiking, but yesterday at the Co-op, the opposite proved to be true. Jackson was pushing his mini-shopping cart around and I had to bend down to help him with something (I think his Thomas the Tank Engine train got stuck in the cart or something) when I noticed a sign reading "reduced price veggies, prices as marked." I dug through the bin and was delighted to find a bag of vegetables that were not only pretty good looking for being "bad" but also selected for their ability to become a soup together. Here's what I found:
Call them "old" or "bad" or "past their prime" if you will but it doesn't matter one bit when you saute them up, add some vegetable stock, simmer for a long time and then blend into a creamy sweet potato soup for tonight's dinner (I added two more sweet potatoes from my counter too).
All for $4. I guess sometimes looking down is a good thing.

that herb looks like rosemary to me....
YUMMY!
I agree with Amanda, that looks like Rosemary. What a delightful find. There is nothing else as comforting or satisfying in cold weather as a bowl of hot homemade soup. The quote is perfect.
(It's not rosemary either. I know my rosemary very well!) :)
so what was it??? the suspense is killing me!!!
Wow, I guessed rosemary too...there are some unusual varieties of rosemary out there with varied leaves, but I'm guessing you'd know the smell right away. What a mystery! If it smells good to you, chances are it will go beautifully with potatoes and onions. Mmm.

I had some in my garden a few years ago but can't remember what it smelled or tasted like. I need to plant some again this year, I think.
Good work on the soup!
I believe this would be a member of the tarragon family. My first guess was rosemary, however with your knowledge of that herb, I am thinking Russian Tarragon...good find!

Savory! I am pretty sure...I LOVE co-ops, good find.
The marked-down produce is my FAVORITE thing about Seward. I always buy whatever's there.
That last comment was from me (Suzan)...I didn't realize Chad was logged in. Also, my friend wrote on her 25 Random Things: "I always look down when I walk. I miss a lot of what other people see. But I see a lot of things that other people miss." I love that quote!
